Rijetkost
specifičnog talenta izražavanja kroz minijaturu, u vremenu u kojem se moć izražava
veličinom, može biti previđena, neprepoznata. Ana Horvat svoju prvu samostalnu
izložbu, dosljedno svom radu, posvećuje upravo malom formatu. Živost njenih kroki
skulptura od kombiniranih materijala karakterizira lakoća i neopterećenost primjerena
mladim autorima. Božica Matasić In the time when power is associated with largeness, a rare talent of making miniatures can easily be overlooked and unrecognized. In accordance with her work, Ana Horvat dedicates her first exhibition to a small-scale art. Her sketchy sculptures of combined materials have all those features characteristic for young artists - vividness, lightness and freedom from conventions. Open to influences, she eclectically uses anything that may serve as a constructive element. This includes ready-made objects such as various bizarre toys that emphasize humor and grotesque appearing in her work. She exaggerates human weaknesses: self-sufficiency, arrogance, greed and small pleasures, using both human and animal figures, sculptures and assemblages. Still, these are not caricatures: Ana neither mocks nor condemns but introduces slight irony. It's easy to become affectionate towards this small-scale world. It gives us a sense of superiority and control, the way toys do to children. More careful observation reveals two-headed bears, mutated babies, voodoo dolls and other unpleasant creatures. Elastic net becomes an airy summer dress, toilet paper attached to a wire skeleton plays a role of a skin, while silicone putty looks very like a fur coat. Although dealing with banal materials and motives, Ana succeeds to avoid banality in a sense of artistic achievement. Her creative lightness does not fall into shallowness - on the contrary, she keeps spectator's attention from slipping away and rewards it by discovering of numerous details. Bringing together elements of infantile and ironic, banal and witty, bizarre and classic, Ana Horvat stands on the verge of Neo-dadaism, a strong starting point for a future effort. translated by Luka Korlaet |
