Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb / Biennial of Painting

Group exhibition

ABOUT THE BIENNIAL OF PAINTING

The Biennial of Painting, organized by the Croatian Association of Fine Artists, is a national art event dedicated to recording the scene and the shift in the medium of painting, launched with the idea of presenting the current state of Croatian painting and confronting current European painting practices.

The Croatian selection represents a wide cross-section of generations that actively shape the painting scene, from the oldest, members of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, to the youngest who create new impulses to enter the scene, with the aim of recording the current 2-year production. The Biennial of Painting also hosts an exhibition of foreign authors, which, according to the concept of a guest curator, presents a cross-section of the painting scene of a European city (2011, I am Berliner, Berlin; 2013, Vienna Calling, Vienna; 2015, Exporting Gdańsk, Gdańsk; 2017, Extended Painting Prague, Prague; 2019 The Leipzig Connection, Leipzig). Through the 5 editions so far, 150 Croatian artists and more than 70 foreign artists have been presented at the Biennial of Painting.

The 6th edition of the Biennial of Painting lasts from 21.10 to 5.12.2021, and is held at the HDLU House / Meštrović Pavilion, with the guest exhibition Dubliners conceived by Mark Cullen and Gavin Murthy (Pallas Project Studios, Dublin, Ireland).

Recognizing the need to present and represent the widest possible cross-section of visual art research and the work of artists in the medium of painting, this year the Biennial goes beyond the framework of the Meštrović Pavilion, and part of the accompanying exhibition program is performed at as many as 7 additional locations in the vicinity, and in cooperation with numerous museum and gallery institutions.
