The exhibition presents an overview of the twelfth edition of the Open Day of Art – Cash & Carry, through the publication of the same name and a selection of works by graduate students at the Department of Teacher Education of the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. Along the gallery space, in an uninterrupted series, through the C&C ribbon, we follow the cross-section of events and program activities at C&C, held in 2016 – from the permanent, unavoidable aspects of the event such as the exhibition of works by students of the 3rd year of undergraduate, and 1st and 2nd year of graduate studies of sculpture, painting, graphics and applied graphics, then a humanitarian exhibition, an homage to Iva Vraneković, exhibition of works created at the Drawing Marathon, music program and art workshops – to new segments of the program, and these are the projects FrizART and Black Linocut, Bright Future, and the projects Zidić and Art and Environment in the Outdoor Space of Jabukovac 10. An integral part of the publication is a special appendix with the works of students of the 3rd year of the undergraduate and 1st and 2nd year of the graduate study of sculpture, painting, graphics and applied graphics at the Department of Education, where we follow the generation of students who marked the mentioned edition of the event, and then the final exhibition of the department in the academic year 2015/2016. In the exhibition space, the C&C ribbon is intertwined with the original works of students of the existing graduate study programs at the Department of Education. On the eve of marking the 100th anniversary of the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, with this exhibition we would like to once again focus attention on the event, which for thirteen years has continuously affirmed communication between the audience and students of the Department of Teacher Education of the Academy of Fine Arts, through student exhibitions and various program activities and educational content, also delving into the field of management and marketing in culture. Marketing tools, as well as management as a whole, are specific when it comes to art and artists. Although much less than before, they are still the subject of controversy and, in addition to moderate views, oscillate from those who see them as a threat and the collapse of art and culture to those who sympathetically predict a great momentum for cultural management in our midst. It should be said that this broad field does not imply exclusively commercial activity, but also the sphere of the "symbolic economy", which implies the exchange of ideas and thoughts, which the author Sarah Thorton points out in the introduction to the book Seven Days in the Art World as inherent in the world of art. Many will also say that the artist himself, as an individual, is never just an innocent creator separated from the pragmatic aspects of his vocation, so he finds the means to work, designs his own exhibitions, takes care of the presentation of the work, looks for who will write the foreword to the exhibition, applies for competitions, residencies and more. In the end, the perception and application of marketing and managerial tools will largely depend on the personal decision and attitude of the individual, the artist. However, as an educational institution, it is our duty to discuss and practically test today's inevitable processes and the participants of the complex world of art and culture, as well as their role in the art system, and to try to shape and nurture the attitudes of future generations in favor of the primacy of art and honesty towards what is done, without which acting in art does not make much sense. Cash & Carry – Open Day, in this sense, represents a place of application and exchange of experiences related to these topics, and a constant challenge to search for innovative, quality solutions for future editions of the event.
