FROM THE PREFACE OF THE EXHIBITION
What is surreal today, a hundred years after the publication of the surrealist manifesto? Is it a dream, unconsciously, an illusion of perception, manipulation of information, or a digital reality in which algorithms produce images faster than we can understand them?
The exhibition Nadrealno_nadrealni brings together students of the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb and the Faculty of Fine Arts in Belgrade – representatives of Generation Z, a generation that has grown up between the physical and virtual worlds, between the intimacy of internal states and the hyperproduction of images of contemporary culture.
Starting from the centenary of surrealism and a large exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade, students have opened up questions that shape our perception of reality today through the teaching process in Zagreb and Belgrade: how illusions arise, how meanings are deformed in communication, how the inner world of an individual influences the experience of reality, and what happens when technology begins to produce images faster than human imagination.
The works created as part of the courses Contemporary Visual Art in Methodological Practices at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb and Methodologies of Visual Culture at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Belgrade, led by Prof. Maja Bosnar, are the result of a parallel teaching process, but also of the specific circumstances in which they were created – between studios, museums, temporary teaching spaces and the period of academic blockade during 2024/2025.
In the students' works, dragons emerged from lies and misunderstandings, circles of consciousness, shadows of the repressed psyche, fragments of bodies that become landscapes of emotions, light collisions of peace and unrest, graphs of the value of art in the era of the market and artificial intelligence, as well as the fragile border between reality and virtual illusion.
The exhibition at the Šira Gallery is therefore not just an overview of student works. It is a meeting of two academies, two cities and one generation that no longer seeks the surreal only in dreams, but also in everyday life in the modern world.
