From the foreword by Petra Šarin:
"We remember some people through images, others through smells. Some remain deeply inscribed in our bodies, in gestures and movements that we are not always aware of. Some of us are left with laughter scattered in our memories, of others only a few sentences that, sometimes without knowing it, we carry with us through life. All of them, in different ways, have shaped us. They have built and changed, demolished and dissolved. In front of some, we gathered, became smaller, while others expanded us, opened us to the world and, at least for a moment, set us free. Sometimes all these contradictions met in the same person.
Some loved us, others tried to do it the only way they knew. Others never even tried. We allowed some to get close to us, we built walls in front of others. Some loves we chose, others we inherited, along with their unspoken expectations, silences and unfinished sentences.
All of this built us up and broke us at the same time, often without warning. But can one even prepare for such fractures? For the moments in which the known world suddenly dissipates, and what was present until yesterday becomes the object of memory? Whose hands do we remember, whose voices do we still hear, even when silence has long come? What do we decide to take with us, and what, despite all our efforts, we never manage to leave behind? What remains of people when they are no longer there?
In her work, multimedia artist Ksenija Turčić explores the tensions between the contradictions that simultaneously inhabit human experience, their constant coexistence, mutual turmoil and the impossibility of final resolution. They emerge in the form of intrusive thoughts, fragments of paintings and fragmented memories. Using imaginative and visual procedures within the expanded field of painting, the artist squares, rearranges, blurs and collages fragments of personal history mediated by family photographs, intertwining moments of loss and longing, fear and pain, tenderness and hurt. Between what is remembered and what escapes memory, a space is created in which the past is constantly dissolved and reassembled, never taking on a final, complete form."
